Catching Gum Disease Before It Takes Hold
Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems, and also one of the most overlooked. It often develops quietly, with few obvious symptoms in its early stages, which is why so many people do not realize they have it until it has already begun to damage the gums and bone that support their teeth. Left untreated, it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
The encouraging news is that gum disease is both preventable and treatable, especially when caught early. At Mill Ridge Family Dental, we take gum health seriously. Because we have a periodontist in-house, our Milton patients receive expert gum care without being sent to an unfamiliar office, from early intervention all the way through advanced treatment.

Recognizing the Warning Signs
- Red, swollen, or tender gums that look inflamed
- Bleeding while brushing or flossing, which is rarely normal
- Persistent bad breath that does not go away with brushing
- Gums that are pulling away from your teeth, making them look longer
- Loose or shifting teeth in more advanced cases
- Tenderness when chewing or a change in how your bite feels
- New sensitivity as gums recede and expose the roots
Understanding the Stages of Gum Disease
- Gingivitis is the earliest stage, marked by red, swollen, or bleeding gums. At this point the condition is usually reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care.
- Periodontitis develops when gingivitis is left untreated. The infection spreads below the gumline, forming pockets and beginning to break down the bone that supports your teeth. Treatment at this stage focuses on stopping the progression and restoring health.
- Advanced periodontitis is the most serious stage, where significant bone and tissue loss can lead to loose teeth or tooth loss. This stage calls for specialized periodontal treatment, which our in-house periodontist is able to provide.
